As the Manager of Operational Excellence, you will be responsible for managing the Lean activities for Welbilt operations, and to achieve results based on strategy deployment. You will constantly review processes to eliminate waste in both manufacturing and business process areas, create strategic lean transformation plans and drive preparation & execution of improvement efforts throughout the facility. You will engage the organization to adapt or maintain a lean continuous improvement.

The position reports directly to the Director of Operations, located in Mt Pleasant, MI.

Major Accountabilities:

  • Drives flow, pull, and material management through operations; cell design with product, material, and information flow considerations; plan for every part implementation; and pull systems and flow concepts in all applicable areas based on appropriate task time.
  • Drives lean thinking into the office to create enterprise level value stream management, including: customer interfacing and new product development areas. This includes: implementing 5S and standard work in the office, visual management, and daily improvements as needed.
  • Leads lean assessment preparation and develops improvement plan based on assessment results. Uses lean techniques to perform process reviews and aid in establishing standardized work procedures.
  • Lead and Manage CI and Lean Initiatives.  
  • Assist in the development/architecture and implementation of the WPS.
  • Be the SME for the CI and lean principles including Six Sigma.
  • Assist in the development of WPS/CI strategy.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain lean transformation material and plan including value stream maps to identify key opportunities to eliminate waste and improve efficiency and performance, based on strategy deployment and business results.
  • Audit and evaluate maturity of every plan in terms of their lean journey.
  • Act as an Ambassador/Champion for lean enterprise and drives the change management throughout all business functions.
  • Coordinate and support all lean manufacturing activities within the operation including Kaizen events, projects, and any other activity to improve and further lean efforts and ensure execution of transformation plan.
  • Support operations and office group to establish and maintain standard work and continuous flow in all areas, including 5S and visual management.
  • Provide lean training and coaching for site employees based on needs and requirements.


Job Requirements

Specialized Skills, Knowledge and Responsibilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Engineering preferred) with a minimum of 5 years’ experience from a manufacturing background in Manufacturing, Engineering, Continuous Improvement or Lean OR a minimum of 16 years’ experience from a manufacturing background in lean manufacturing and training, technical, engineering or manufacturing in lieu of degree.
  • Experience in a unionized manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience in Lean/Six Sigma required (Black Belt preferred).
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and internal and external customers and contacts globally.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and superior communication skills.
  • Ability to plan organize and prioritize activities in a highly resource limited environment. 
  • Ability to deal with frequently changing priorities and unexpected events.
  • Ability to work with teams to develop consensus in solving problems and developing plans.
  • Ability to develop and deliver focused training on lean and other best practices within all phases of the manufacturing value stream.
  • Ability to influence people, sell new ideas and obtain resources to implement change.
  • Black-belt training preferred.
  • Available to work on and support a multi-shift operation.
  • Proficient usage of Microsoft Office, MS Project, Visio, and Skype.
  • Up to 20% travel required
